We had problems installing on exisiting Gentoo distro. Pear wasn't connecting to the database. Thought it would be safer to install on a clean system. Is there a prefered distro?

Actually, Gentoo. Very few other distros support PHP 5 as standard.
Do you have any error log messages that might give a hint to the problem?
We also regularly install on Mac OS X systems if you have one available.
