Ups, that was easy ;) I missed to check the right file type.

I probably was so concerned with my course that sanity and reason just wouldn't do it anymore.
Thanks for your help.

This sounds like its a problem with file permissions. If the edit page is taking you back to the edit page, this could possibly mean that the file you are trying to upload doesn't have the correct file permissions. E.g. if you are trying to upload a PDF go to the Module options tab in the Administration area, click options and check both allowed and disallowed file types and make sure that specific file type is allowed in the allowed file types and not selected in the disallowed file types.

I can't create any entry under Resources anymore. I know it worked before but now it sends me back to the input or edit screen if I press the upload button. No entry whatsoever .. not in the list of resources nor in the database!
We where trying to fixed a similar problem before where members could not suggest a resource but administrators and mentors could (http://open.omnium.net.au/forum/topic/broken-permissions-for-resources).
The problem is a bit of a bummer since I don't know how to get files in this area but need to for the end of my course.

Sorry, I hadn't been tracking the replies to this.

Sam, you're right about PHP, I forgot about that on Dreamhost. I'll upgrade (and hope everything works still!) and see what happens, but it will have to be when I have a bit of spare time. I'll report back with some results.

BTW, any answer as to what permissions the codebase requires?

For number 3 it looks like you are using PHP4. Omnium relies on the class autoload feature of PHP5 and this seems to be in line with that functionality not being present.

It's pretty easy to switch over to PHP5 in the Dreamhost Panel. Your WordPress install shouldn't be affected. There are documented methods to run PHP4 and PHP5 in the same domain at Dreamhost (actually, I wrote them) but hopefully you won't have to go to those lengths.

User directories are generally more restrictive in Apache than the Apache root directory.

Most of the problems you are experiencing have to do with the funky OS X way of configuring Apache. A bit of digging around the Apache documentation should help you get the user directories opened up a bit.

The ImageMagick in /usr/local/bin pobaly didn't have support for JPEG and PNG. The other ImageMagick probably did.

There should only be one [programs] section in the INI file. The one at the top. The installer is probably the culprit there.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I was up at Brisbane at the CreateWorld conference.

I think this error may be fixed by part 2.

This is a problem new Paul and I have been talking about recently. There currently isn't a field in the installer to specify what hostname for the database, which is definitely a problem when you are using shared hosting such as DreamHost. We are going to be implementing this soon, so watch this space. In the meantime you can specify this in the
custom/config/dataobject.config.php
file just add the line
$dataobject['dbdsn']['hostspec'] = 'apolaine.polaine.com';
.

This is an odd one. Are you using PHP4 or PHP5? To check this either go to your Dreamhost panel or make a new test.php file with phpinfo();

Overriding the php.ini file is another kettle of fish. But we'll see if we can figure these problems out first.

It was my understanding when I installed on my Powerbook that
database name
is the name of the *table* used to hold the omnium data in the MySQL database. It seemed to work anyway. My MySQL installation has a single database in which I have several tables for different applications, CMSs etc. I think my web host does the same thing.

I thought it might be useful to document the experience (and hopefully at some point the solution) of installing Omnium on a commercial webhost. It would broaden the usage quite a bit if it was relatively easy to do, but of course one has far less access to the innards and set-up of the server. I do, however, have shell access to my Dreamhost account.

So, far, just trying to install in a clean directory:

Installer couldn't connect to the MySQL socket. Not sure why this is and I haven't investigated much further, but see the next point about this. BTW, here's the error code:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) in /home/.jason/polainep/polaine.com/omnium/installer/install.php on line 107

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/.jason/polainep/polaine.com/omnium/installer/install.php:107) in /home/.jason/polainep/polaine.com/omnium/installer/install.php on line 476

On the installer page you have a field for the database name. Here it's not clear if this is the hostname, just the database name or both (i.e., apolaine.polaine.com or omnium or both). You used to be able to put in the hostname in the cofig file in custom, but this appears to not be the case anymore. Most people if they have a web panel (or even just PHPMyAdmin) will know their hostname and it's not always localhost on commercial hosted servers. I reckon this could be clearer in terms of exactly what you want people to enter into those fields and/or you should be able to put in the hostname (as I think that's why I'm not connecting to the mySQL server isn't it?).

So, I went for a manual install instead. But there's a step missing from the installation instructions (I think) which is what to CHMOD the codebase to. I have it on 755 at present, but even so I'm not hooking into the classes for some reason. Getting this error:

Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: om_omnium in /home/.jason/polainep/polaine.com/omnium/codebase/includes/global.inc.php on line 77

The install is at: http://www.polaine.com/omnium/cleint/ if you want to take a look, but it's not going to get you very far.

Any thoughts about this?

It's not particularly urgent for me to sort out, but I thought I'd give it a go. Once this is going the next stage is to tackle things like setting the php.ini and mySQL filesize settings. No idea how I can do that and override the default Dreamhost ones....

That is quite strange! I think it must've been a problem with the installer inserting the
[programs]
area of the
omnium.ini
after the original one instead of overwriting it. I hope the installation process wasn't too painful, it would be nice to get some feedback on the application as well. The feedback you gave and problems you have found with the installation process has been most helpful, thanks :)

Ok, found the problem. 2 things:

Ok, thanks for that. That means that although the IM programs *are* installed in
/usr/local/bin
something else is happening. Here's what I found:

First, omnium.ini has *two*
[programs]
sections -- one near the top and one at the bottom, the second being a duplicate of the first! Obviously I didn't think it would have two sections. Hence, I changed the paths in the top one but the bottom one was resetting them!

Second, although
which mogrify
returns
/usr/local/bin
, I found if I changed the locations in omnium.ini to
/opt/local/bin
in *both*
[programs]
sections, then the thumbnails and image zoom now work.
/opt/local/bin
has the versions of the ImageMagick programs installed by MacPorts. Why the ones in
/usr/local/bin
don't work I have no idea, but I'm not really a Unix person yet, so that's no surprise. The file sizes of, for example, the two mogrify programs are different, so perhaps there's a versioning issue? I can't find out how to get mogrify to tell me what version it is though.

Phew

This still sounds like an ImageMagick problem. I changed my omnium.ini file to point to the wrong path for the programs and I got an error much like yours. Could you try and check the path in the terminal and use the ImageMagick applications to see if the are working properly.

I reinstalled ImageMagick using MacPorts and changed the
omnium.ini
file to point to these versions of the IM programs (in
/opt/local/bin
) and still no joy. I created a gallery entry and have tried JPEG and PNG images with no success. The only images that seem to show thumbnails are GIFs. PNGs show neither thumbnail nor full size image (clicking on the magnifying glass). No JPEGs show thumbnails, though *some* show up in full size mode (but only some). TIFFs (after I changed the settings to allow upload) show a default icon -- clicking on the magnifying glass shows a 'download this file' icon.

Does this offer any clues as to the problem?

I'm playing around with my new Omnium installation. I created a news item and uploaded a JPEG image. Alas, the thumbnail is blank as is the large frame that opens up when I click on the image. I have tried PNG as well.

I assume this is something to do with PHP's use of GD? I think I have GD2 installed. When I type
php -i
I do see the following section in the output:
Although the main
httpd.conf
may be allowing symlinks to be followed, the individual
user_name.conf
file may not.

Update

I scrubbed all evidence of Pear and PHP and reinstalled entropy's PHP5 and then installed the pear packages. After dealing with increasing the various file upload size settings I got *something* to run. I browse to
localhost/~user_name/index.php
and it takes me to
localhost/~user_name/base
and presents me with a login screen. I enter the username and password created during the install and it tries to take me to:

http://localhost/~user_name/modules/news/

whereupon I am told:

You don't have permission to access /~user_name/modules/news/ on this server.

Sigh.
What am I missing?

No joy.

I've had a beast of a time trying to install omnium all round. The auto install *doesn't* create a folder on the web server with the name of the project. The manual install won't let me create a symbolic link to codebase/index.php and trying to access that file directly gives a 403 error. The auto install appears to work until you access index.php at which point I get the MDB2 error.

There was an old version of Pear from PHP 4 on the system, but I thought I had got everything pointing to the new version. In any case, both versions of Pear have MDB2 installed. On my OS X system PHP5 is installed in /usr/local/php5. Can someone give me a list of *all* the settings needed to ensure harmonious working? That is, what should pear config-show give me back, and what folder should include_path in php.ini point to?

It looks like you might have more than one installation of PEAR. If you go into your php.ini file which should be located in the /etc directory there should be the line
include_path=".:/usr/share/pear"
or something along those lines which tells PHP where to look for your PEAR libraries. You can either change this include path to
include_path=".:/usr/local/php5/bin/pear"
or install the PEAR packages to this specific installation of PEAR. Hope this helps.

Basically the function can be pasted anywhere within the class. Just put the new function below one of the other functions and everything should be sweet.

Thanks for your help. I looked into the module file and where able to locate the specified function. Now I wonder where to copy-past your code since my file seems to have different line numbers.
Is it necessary to past the code somewhere specific or can I just put it on the end of the file?

I'm just running the system with around 40 users and try to keep the code-jockey part as low as possible ;)

This was definitely a bug, basically the thumbnail wasn't being reset when it was looping through the news articles. It has been fixed in [1241]. Cheers Wolf

So far I could not verify if this is happen constantly over the whole project but ..

If you post a message within the Team Notices, not containing a preview of some sort and post another message containing a file preview thereafter, the new preview will appear in all consecutive old messages without preview until a message was set with a preview anyway.

Strangely too, this preview replication doesn't make the text wrap as normal before the preview - the text rather runs under the preview field as if it wasn't there.

This was a big bug which we somehow missed in the release of 4.0.1 and also made it into the 4.0.2. We fixed it about a week ago, to get it working you can paste this function into the MODULE_Resources file. This will definitely be fixed in the upcoming 4.0.5 release of the software.

The team features navigation is not actually in any of the lang files. I fixed this in the last commit, it only has a couple of minor changes so it'll probably be easiest to modify the files in your codebase. We're currently doing an audit on hardcoded strings, so if you find any more please let us know.

I'm running version 4.0.1 (installer 1.0.2)

I noticed the problem while I was trying to grant users the right to suggest resources for the resources module. The 'Suggest new resource' button correctly appears but it only brings up a blank page (no warnings, nothing).
With higher rights (i.e. as Moderator or Admin) the button works just fine as well as the similar one 'Create new resource'. Within the admin-panel all rights seem to be set correctly (User can suggest; Admins can create) but again .. I can't even enable a specific user for the suggest-feature in the panel. Every attempt is prompted with "That user does not exist".
So far the only workaround would be to enable users to 'manage items' within resources - which is the same setting as for Admins.

For my actual course I managed to change a couple of headline entries to their german equivalents. This was done by editing the lang.en.library.php file within the respective folders each located in codebase/modules_default/ So far that's fine, however the described modification did not change the matching entries in the navigation bar within each team module!

Where do I find the configuration for those entries?

A couple of small but really annoying bugs have forced us to quickly release a maintenance version.

4.0.2 fixes a couple of nasty installation bugs. The installer program was also updated to 1.0.2, so if you are using the installer, then you will need to re-download that too.

Everything is available via the Omnium Open home page
